China's currency has been on a wild ride. The USD/CNY pair has swung between 6.3 and 7.3 over the past two years, driven by trade tensions, interest rate gaps between the Fed and PBOC, and China's economic recovery pace. If you're getting paid in RMB or sending money home, even a 0.1 shift can mean hundreds of yuan difference on a single transfer.
Quick tip: Banks and transfer services often add a 1-3% markup on top of the mid-market rate. Always compare the rate you're offered against what you see here โ that's your benchmark.
Is this rate the same as what my bank gives me? No. This shows the mid-market (interbank) rate. Your bank or money transfer service will add a spread. Wise (formerly TransferWise) tends to be closest to this rate.
Can I use this for business accounting? Yes, the ECB reference rate is widely accepted for accounting purposes. Just note the date of the rate you used.
Why is CNY sometimes called RMB? CNY is the ISO currency code. RMB (Renminbi) is the official name of the currency โ it means "people's currency." Think of it like GBP (the code) vs Sterling (the name).
